A Step Back: Maine Repeals Same Sex Marriage

With 87 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday morning, 53 percent of voters had approved the repeal, ending an expensive and emotional fight that was closely watched around the country as a referendum on the national gay-marriage movement. Polls had suggested a much closer race.

With the repeal, Maine became the 31st state to reject same-sex marriage at the ballot box. Five other states — Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire and Vermont — have legalized same-sex marriage, but only through court rulings and legislative action.

NYC vainest city in America?

The blog totalbeauty.com has named New York City as the vainest city in America. Even places like LA, number 5, and Miami, number 2, apparently don’t measure up. Not so sure I buy it….

Sure, there are only 4.1 plastic surgeons per 100,000 people in the New York City region (compared to Salt Lake City’s six), but the Big Apple outspends every other city in nearly every category — more than $21 million on hair coloring, $32.5 million on skin care, $5.5 million on makeup and nearly $530,000 on hair growth products. According to the Census Bureau, there were more than ten thousand personal care businesses (think: hair and nail salons, day spas) in 2002 (the most recent year available) — nearly three times the number in any other city.

Interview with Coralie Bickford-Smith

penguinclassics
Penguin Classics cloth bound books were only available in the UK but now they’ve made it over to this side of the pond. The lovely patterns are designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. The lovely blog Design*Sponge has nabbed an interview with her to welcome in the US release of the covers. This may have me picking up a few of these in the near future.

How did you choose the motifs for the patterns? Was it hard to narrow down an entire novel into one icon?

One of the great things about designing for the classics is that the material is so rich and full of possibilities – it’s not about finding the one and only perfect signifier for a book, but one that works within the context of this series, and perhaps which takes a slightly new angle on a familiar work. I read the books and discussed them with one of out picture researchers, Isabelle De Cat, then we created mood boards full of ideas, and narrowed it down from there. Some of the final patterns are more literal than others. The peacock feather on Dorian Grey, for example, plays on the book’s themes of vanity and the superficial, whereas the leaf motif on Jane Eyre refers directly to the lightning-blasted chestnut tree, a concrete element in the text that serves as a potent symbol of the book’s central relationship.

Hulu to Charge for Content (beginning 2010)

One of the web’s fastest growing and most liked websites, Hulu, is going to make the switch over from free to paid. This does not necessarily mean that all content is going to be charged for but we can make a guess that most of it probably will. These charges may even encompass broadcast content, the free channels, which is even more of a bummer. Not cool, not cool at all.
